Canadian Horse Journal Honoured at 2026 Equine Media Awards

Canadian Horse Journal recognized at the 2026 Equine Media Awards for excellence in equine journalism

By Kathy Smith, Editor and Publisher

Canadian Horse Journal was once again recognized for editorial excellence during the American Horse Publications (AHP) 2026 Equine Media Awards held during the AHP annual conference in Lexington, Kentucky in May.

Held annually since 1974, this year’s AHP Awards competition for material published in 2025 attracted 460 entries over numerous categories from AHP members who represent the top equine media from across North America.

We are thrilled to announce that the article Social License to Operate in Equestrian Sport by Li Robbins, published in Canadian Horse Journal’s Annual Industry Guide 2025, earned First Place in the Service to the Horse Industry category.

Since joining our team of contributors in 2024, Li has brought thoughtful insight and strong journalism to our pages, and this recognition highlights both her talent and the importance of informed conversation within the equestrian community. Li joins several of our writers who have been honoured through these prestigious awards over the years, a testament to the quality and dedication of the contributors who help shape Canadian Horse Journal.

Judge’s comment: “Well-written and clear. Uses several ‘voices.’ Lead does a good job drawing reader into the story. As a side note, layout and photo choices enhance the impact (although they did not factor into deciding this contest.) The sources cite mostly high-level (i.e. Olympic) competitions although for a good reason, since they are the most visible. Story flirts with becoming an opinion piece but doesn't cross the line.

We are also pleased to honour Tania Millen, BSc, MJ, whose feature Spruce Meadows: Supporting Canadian Show Jumping for 50 Years, was recognized with an Honourable Mention in the category of Editorial Event Coverage Single Article. Tania’s article chronicled the development of Spruce Meadows since opening to the world on April 13, 1975, to its 50-year anniversary in 2025: “For 50 years, Spruce Meadows’ rolling fields have welcomed the world of show jumping to the Canadian west, and in doing so have helped develop some of Canada’s best athletes. Just as the Ron and Marg Southern dared to imagine all those years ago.”

Judge’s comment: “Nailed the assignment with clear writing. No faults to find.”
